In this issue, Wang et al. conducted genome-wide CRISPR-Cas9 screens to identify essential genes across a panel of cancer cell lines. Global analysis of gene essentiality pattern uncovered correlations between functionally related gene sets – a set towards elucidating the functional organization of human cells.

The cover illustration is an homage to Fritz Kahn’s depiction of man as a machine. Each room within the cellular factory depicts a process in which co-essential gene sets were identified. The Cas9 protein is outline on the tiles of the floor.
